Polygon, formerly known as the Matic blockchain network, provides a simple framework for new and current blockchain projects to develop on Ethereum without worrying about scalability.
The Ethereum blockchain can only handle a certain amount of transactions per second. The basic layer has a throughput rate of about 14 transactions per second. On Ethereum, each transaction incurs transaction costs known as gas fees. Scaling methods like Polygon conduct transactions on side chains to reduce gas costs. Polygon can manage up to 65,000 transactions per second, whereas Ethereum can only handle about 17 transactions per second.
